“This picture will forever represent one of the first persons saved by SOS MEDITERRANEE. It was on March 7, 2016, at 7:05 AM.
An extended hand, another hand that takes it, and this gaze into empty space. It was 6:20 AM when the fragil boat was first sighted. It would take more than half an hour until this first survivor could finally feel safe aboard this large ship with its orange hull. A half hour that means nothing compared to the many months that she had to spend in Libya. A half hour before getting a new lease of life. A life far away from the Libyan horrors.”
Patrick Bar was the first photographer of SOS MEDITERRANEE. The first pictures of the Aquarius reaching land, as well as those of the first rescues, are his. This week we take a look back to SOS MEDITERRANEE´s first rescue, on March 7, 2016.
